This 1991 article explores the conflicts between animal rights and animal agriculture, and profiles the work and thoughts of Penn State animal scientists and their work in animal behavior, cognition, and related areas. This is an issue that many in the college felt the college magazine should not address, but the article successfully positioned Penn State as being proactive, open and reflective on animal issues, rather than defensive and secretive, and defused student-led animal-rights protests of the college’s activities.
